Pacific Country Embraces Metaverse to Escape Rising Waters

Faced with the imminent threat of being submerged under ocean waters, the Pacific nation has turned to the Metaverse for a complete solution.

Simon Kofe, Tuvalu’s Minister of Justice, Communications, and Foreign Affairs, announced this strategy in a speech to leaders at COP27.

Kofe described this as a “worst-case scenario”, wherein the plan involves creating a digital twin of Tuvalu in the metaverse to preserve its islands and rich culture.

Kofe also issued a crucial warning to the leaders: “Tuvalu might be the first country in the world to exist solely in cyberspace, but it won’t be the last if global warming isn’t controlled.”

The aim is to ensure that Tuvalu continues to “function as a fully sovereign state” even as its inhabitants are compelled to relocate elsewhere.

However, the practicalities and acceptance of a digital-only country remain uncertain at this point. It is hoped that such a scenario will not materialize and that the people of Tuvalu can continue living on their island for many more years.
